Hokkaido is Japan's second largest island. The Tsugaru Strait separates Hokkaido from Honshu (although they are still connected by an underwater railway tunnel). The largest city in Hokkaido is Sapporo.
Few make as far north as Hokkaido when visiting Japan, but if you do it really is worth the travel. With beautiful wide open roads and scenery as far as the eye can see, Hokkaido is both refreshing and hypnotic. Skiing, hikinng, biking, snowboarding, rafting, fishing, camping, canoeing, bird-watching, partying, bathing in hot springs, and of course the Yuki Matsuri (snow festival). The list is endless when it comes to Hokkaido, making it the gem of Japan.
