Distinctly different from the rest of Japan due to its language, cuisine, arts and lifestyle, Okinawa is located in one of Japan's southern prefectures and emcompasses hundreds of the Ryukyu islands in a chain spanning over 1,000 km long, extending from Kyushu to Taiwan. The Okinawa Prefecture can be divided into three major island groups, the Okinawa Islands (Okinawa Shoto), the Miyako Islands (Miyako Retto), and the Yaeyama Islands (Yaeyama Retto). In addition to Okinawan Japanese, there remain numerous Ryukyuan languages which are more-or-less incomprehensible to mainland Japanese speakers.
Okinawa's climate is subtropical, with temperatures barely dropping below 14 degrees during the winter season. The seas surrounding Okinawa's islands are said to be the world's most beautiful and wonderfully enveloped with coral reefs and abundant marine wildlife. Having the world's second largest aquarium is not a bad attraction either! It truly is a dream destination with a sun-soaked view!
