Can I Use a JR Pass to Travel to and from Narita Airport?

Is it possible to use the Japan Rail Pass to travel from Nairta Airport to the centre of Tokyo and what is the best route to take?

    Yes, with no restrictions!

Once you have arrived at Narita Airport, there is still a small journey left to reach the centre of Tokyo and if you validate your Japan Rail Pass immediately, you can use it to travel this distance.

    Narita Express

The best method for making this journey is to use what is called the Narita Express, a shuttle train service running from Narita Airport the the major stations in Tokyo on a regular schedule. The journey takes approximately 50 minutes and is the quickest route between the two areas. The Narita Express stops at a selection of stations including Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shinjuku and Ikebukuro so it is very convenient as it can take you to anywhere you need to. The following map shows the routes available from Narita Airport, but please note that only the JR operated lines can be used with your Japan Rail Pass.

Can i use pass from Osaka Kansai airport into the city?

    #2 Ayumi on 07.10.08 at 2:52 pm

Yes, the Japan Rail Pass is also valid on the Japan Rail lines from Kansai Airport to Osaka station. The journey takes about one hour on the standard trains.

    I hope this helps!

    Hi Ayumi,

Just wondering, can the JR pass be validated directly from any counter offices while in Narita airport? Also I’m confused by the number of different rail operators and lines - how do I tell which ones are JR lines and which ones are not? Appreciate your help!

    Hi there,

There are two Japan Rail counters at Narita Airport where you can validate your pass, one at each terminal.
They are both next to the main JR station so you should have no trouble finding them.

As for knowing whether trains are operated by Japan Rail or not, all stations will tell you who the operator is. Most trains in Japan are run by JR though so unless you are travelling in very remote areas, it is likely that all the trains will be owned by Japan Rail and you will be able to use your JR Pass.

    Hi Ayumi,
We are travelling to Tokyo for 6 days and wanted to get a travel pass to use during this time. I have read about Suica and NEX that I can buy at the airport. Is this the best option for travelling only around Tokyo?
    Thanks
    sarah

    Hi there,

The Suica card and similarly the Passmo card utilise a system like the London Oyster card, where you can either purchase a prepaid card or top-up an existing card for travelling on the Metro network.

Depending on how much you spend each time, you can save a small amount for each journey. The real benefit though is the convenience of not having to purchase individual tickets at sometimes very confusing stations.

The Narita Express (NEX) is a train shuttle service which runs between Narita Airport and major stations in Tokyo. There is no special pass for this train, so you will need to purchase individual tickets which usually cost approximately ¥3,000 or about £15 for a simgle journey. This is the quickest route out of the airport with journey times to Tokyo about 50 minutes.

    I hope this helps.
