Shibuya to Nagoya on a JR Pass?

Will I be able to use a JR Pass from Shibuya to Nagoya? How long would the journey take?

Yes, and all under 2 hours!

Thanks for your question! The journey from Shibuya to Nagoya is possible on the JR Pass. According to the online JR timetable, the following route is possible:

    • From SHIBUYA take the JR Yamanote Line(Inner loop) to SHINAGAWA
    • From SHINAGAWA board a Hikari Shinkansen Bullet Train to Nagoya

Total time is listed as 119 mins. The total normal cost of a single journey would be ¥10580, so you are almost breaking even if you just make a return trip!

I’ve done that journey many times and depending on the time of day you are travelling it’s a good idea to stay on the Yamanote line for 4 more stops and get off at Tokyo station. If you catch the Shinkansen there you will almost certainly get a seat (if travelling non reserved). I’ve got on at Shinagawa before and had to stand up for a large part of the journey which is no fun when even more people get on at Yokohama. Weekends are even busier.
