The Japan Rail Pass provides unlimited travel on trains operated by the Japan Railways (JR) Group throughout the country. This type of pass can be used for travel throughout Japan.

There are two types of Japan Rail Pass: Green (for superior Green Cars) and Ordinary.

 

JR Pass Validity

The Japan Rail Pass is valid for the railways, buses and ferry boats below:

Railways

All JR Group Railways - Shinkansen super express (except "NOZOMI"), limited express trains, express trains, and rapid or local trains.

Buses

  • JR Local Lines: JR Hokkaido Bus, JR Bus Tohoku, JR Bus Kanto, JR Tokai Bus, West Japan JR Bus , Chugoku JR Bus, JR Shikoku Bus Company, and JR Kyushu Bus.
  • JR Highway Bus Lines: Morioka-Hirosaki/Aomori; Tokyo-Nagoya/Kyoto/Osaka/Tsukuba Centre; Nagoya-Kyoto/Osaka; Osaka-Tsuyama Car Shed/Kasai Flower Centre.

Ferry

JR Ferry (Miyajima-Miyajimaguchi), except Beetle II (Hakata-Pusan)

Accommodation

Many JR trains have Green cars (superior accommodation); all have ordinary cars. With a Green-type Japan Rail Pass you can use either Green or Ordinary cars. With an Ordinary JR Pass, you may only use Ordinary cars without paying additional charges.

Valid Period

The valid period of a Japan Rail Pass are 7, 14, or 21 consecutive days beginning on the date the pass is first used. You must specify, when you turn in your Exchange Order for your Japan Rail Pass, the date that you want to start using the Pass; It can be any date within three months from the date the Exchange Order was issued. Once the Pass has been exchanged, the dates can not be changed.
